Algaiarens to Ciutadella (approx 23 km)
This stage of the Camí de Cavalls from Algaiarens to Ciutadella blends wild coastal scenery with fascinating history and the vibrant atmosphere of Menorca’s beautiful town. After leaving the peaceful valley and beaches of Algaiarens (La Vall), the trail follows a remote and rugged coastline before reaching Cala Morell. This small coastal settlement is known for its remarkable prehistoric caves — a unique archaeological site offering insight into Menorca’s ancient past. A set of fourteen artificial caves have been excavated in the rocky walls of a small ravine and formed one of the largest and most spectacular prehistoric burial sites on the island. It was used as a cemetery from the Naviforme era (1700 B.C.) up until the 2nd century A.D. Along the way, you pass the memorial to General Chanzy. A French steamship that sank off Punta Nati, Menorca, on February 10, 1910, during a storm while traveling from Marseille to Algiers, with only one survivor among roughly 157–160 passengers and crew. Commemorative efforts include a cross near the wreck site (1913), a monument in Ciutadella’s cemetery, and the impetus for building the Punta Nati lighthouse. Continuing west, the route leads towards the dramatic, lunar landscapes of Punta Nati, where the stark beauty of Menorca’s west coast unfolds. The iconic Punta Nati lighthouse rises from a windswept landscape of dry-stone walls and open horizons, a place particularly famous for its spectacular sunsets, powerful atmosphere and sheep. Further along the coast lies Pont d’en Gil, a natural rock arch formed by centuries of erosion. This impressive stone “bridge” over the sea is one of the most photogenic natural formations on Menorca’s west coast and a favourite viewpoint along the trail. Approaching Cala Blanes, the atmosphere changes noticeably. This area is much more tourist-oriented, offering a sharp contrast to the remote and wild sections earlier in the day. From here, the path gradually leads into Ciutadella. Arriving in Ciutadella feels like stepping into another world. With its elegant old town, narrow streets, historic palaces, charming harbour, and relaxed Mediterranean lifestyle.
